I own a property on the Congregational Summer Assembly just north of Frankfort, and have traveled Sutter Road countless times over my lifetime. Moving a portion of the road is absurd for a number of reasons, but to put it simply, it will greatly disturb natural habitat and endanger and displace wildlife, but as a POSITIVE to the “club”, it’s great public relations for golf aficionados to drive by such a lovely private course. So….leaving Sutter Road as it is will be a win-win for nature, AND for the “club”.
Seeing the many signs opposing the proposal amuse me. Signs in Frankfort and along Crystal Dr. way East of the “new” junction make the negatives seem silly/absurd and selfish.
The Sutter Road shortcut to and from Honor and Traverse City is used by residents living throughout the county. It is not necessary to live near Sutter Road to be a stakeholder in this issue.
It always amazes me how these issues are brought up early so that the arrival of Summer residents don’t have a good opportunity to voice their concerns.
Now that people are aware by the signs they can voice their concerns.
My parents Dr and Mrs Harry Blecker would also be so saddened by this change. A route we as a family took for years…Many years ago we started out at CRYSTAL Downs .
This road belongs to the country and the people who have been a part of SUTTER RD. for generations…
About the only thing I agree with in Mr. Morris’ letter published July 26 edition of the Record Patriot is that Sutter Road is a beautiful tree-lined country road.
I also admire his stated concern for the safety of his employees. However, that is where our agreement ends. To put it simply, moving Sutter Road is a self-serving act by the Downs.
Just because a road has been moved before doesn’t mean it should be moved again. He doesn’t indicate the last time Sutter Road was moved, but I’ll bet most readers would not remember the road on another path. The safety concerns are not supported by any reported accidents on the portion of the road they want to move. The benefits stated in his letter only benefit the Downs.
What are the benefits for the rest of us? The slope of the new road is within 3 degrees of the current road, and runoff from the existing road across M-22 is not an issue. Just note the “Don’t Move Sutter Road” directly across from the current intersection.
Employees using the road in vehicles that are not street legal can use the dirt road on the east side. The Downs can expand the paved surface on their property, so delivery trucks don’t have to back in.
Improved practice range? Why should I care? Ingress/ egress points a concern? Fix them on your own property.
Don’t propose something that will, at best, create a significant inconvenience to those hundreds of people that use the road every day and additional safety and environmental problems for the people that live across from the proposed intersection with M-22. The safety concerns can be mitigated by far less intrusive measures and improvements on their own property.
The president of the club was quoted in Colin Merry’s first article on the proposal as saying, “If you have a broken stair, you don’t wait for someone to get hurt before you fix it.” I agree, but you don’t move the entire staircase to the back of the house unless you don’t want to see who is using it.
This is a collective ” THANK YOU ” to Mike Tarkington for all of the research and the provision of actual facts about the situation. Providing the details and basis of the reports allows us to cut through the emotion , misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the project.
The latest documentation about the yacht club lease and additional properties along Sutter Rd. reminds me that we should be vigilant. Success in one battle does not mean that one has won the war.
Hello! I simply would like to offer you a huge thumbs up for the great information you have right here on this post. I will be coming back to your blog for more soon.
